WEEE

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

This acronym has evolved from the EU Directive 2002/96/EC on the subject.

The purpose of the Directive is to prevent waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and reduce the disposal of waste through reuse, recycling and other forms of recovery.

Secondly it seeks to improve the environmental performance of all operators involved in the life cycle of electrical and electronic equipment, e.g. producers, distributors and consumers and in particular those operators directly involved in the treatment of waste electrical and electronic equipment.

This Directive is important as it places an onus on all suppliers to meet these criteria from an environmental perspective and has been legally adopted as a minumum standard in each member state.
