Storage Tiers

Storage Tiers
Summary

Storage Tiers

Description

Storage tiers are a structured approach to managing the deployment of storage resources based on the device caharacteristics of the storage device.

This enables a method for data to be stored on the most appropriate device at the most appropriate time at the most appropriate cost.

The following example of a storage tier shows that data can be migrated between each tier according to its actual usage reducing both it's cost and maximising the productivity of more expensive storage resources.

Example of Storage Tiering

Tier 0 - Solid State Devices
Tier 1 - Fast high performance disk drives
Tier 2 - Slow performance disk drives
Tier 3 - Tape or archive storage

Each tier has its own performance and cost characteristics and movement between the tiers is controlled by data management software.
