Data that is used to identify and describe data

The term meta data is used to describe the concept of 'data about data'.

Meta data is prevalent in databases and other methods of data storage, such as XML.

Meta data is specific to the data it defines and in order to access a database or other data source it is normally necessary to understand the meta data that is associated with it. (Unless the interface to the data is already predefined.)
