Functionally Dead Server
| Functionally Dead Server |
| Summary | A data centre server that has a less than 3% average daily utilisation |
|
| Description |
Where a server is under utilised it is considered functionally dead. A technical method for assessing this is to determine its average daily utilisation. If at 3% or below, the server is unlikely to be of active benefit to the organisation and either consolidation through a virtualisation technology or its removal should be considered. Removing functionally dead servers saves on footprint, energy, cooling, maintenance, software licencing and various other IT costs. |
