The Energy Star programme is operated by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a method of identifying and rewarding innovation in improved energy management. Recipients of the Energy Star award are within the 25% performers within their specific field and have met certain specifications to achieve the award.

For example it is planned that the Energy Star will be awarded to the top 25% of Data Centres with the most efficient PUE signifying that they are operating an energy efficient data center with respect to the energy consumed in operating it.
