Coefficient of Performance

Coefficient of Performance
Summary

Coefficient of Performance (COP)

Description

The Coefficient of Performance when applied to CRAC/CRAH cooling systems provides a simple method of determining how efficient the cooling system is.

It can be considered as a ratio of efficiency of how much energy is used to create a unit of cooling.

The mathematics can be stated stated as the energy acquired to change the temperature divided by the amount of energy consumed.

As a simple example of this if a CRAC operating at a Coefficient of Performance of 2, then to generate sufficient cooling to remove the equivalent of 2KWh heat from the air in the data centre 1 KWh of energy as input to the CRAC would be required to achieve this.

The higher the Coefficient of Performance, the more efficient the Chiller.
