An assessment is a powerful management tool for identifying variances of a current process or performance of a resource against a pre-defined set of measures.

By comparing the required process or resource against a defined set of measures, such as best practices, industry accepted standards or formal standards, it is possible to establish a gap analysis report that can be prioritised and used as a basis for establishing a programme of change to improve the performance of the assessed process or resource.

Conducting assessments should be a regular process and performed when sufficient activity has occured to warrant the expense in conducting a new assessment.
