BS EN 16001
BS EN 16001:2009, is the UK's standard on energy management systems (EnMS). It is based on the common European Standard EN 16001:2009 – Energy Management Systems, which was developed and is maintained by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).
As with all EU standards, th UK implementation of the standard is through the British Standards Institute (BSI). The standard gives a clear and concise set of principles that enable an organisation to establish an effective energy management system that is based on recognised best practice and experience.
The purpose of the standard is to specify requirements for an organisation to establish, implement, maintain, and improve an energy management system, which enables the organisation to take a systematic approach in order to achieve continual improvement of energy performance, energy efficiency, and energy conservation.
The objectives of an energy management system is to address the issues of:
- energy supply
- documentation
- measurement of consumption
- reporting of energy use
- procurement of energy-using equipment
- design practices of energy-using systems
- engineering of management processes
The standard is not prescriptive as it does not define or state specific performance criteria that should be achieved with respect to energy use and consumption but it applies to all aspects of operation and management affecting energy use, including data centres, that can be monitored and influenced by an organisation.
It is a comprehensive standard that has been designed to be used as an independent energy management system but can complement or integrate with other corporate management systems, such as BS EN ISO 140001 and BS EN ISO 9001.
