Adopting the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centres Energy Efficiency
In the absence of formal regulated standards for data centres energy management the EU Code of Conduct on Data Centres Energy Efficiency has emerged as a de-facto standard.
Included within the current release of the EU Code is 115 best practice guidelines that if implemented can help increase the energy efficiency of the data centre.
The EU operates a scheme of voluntary adoption of the EU Code and implements the scheme by regularly requiring a set of energy usage measurements, a report on the status of implementation of the best practices and a plan of operation of how data centre owners will adopt further best practices.
An organisation that implements the EU Code is known as a Participant and data centres that are accepted by the EU are authorised to use their status for any purpose including marketing, or affirmation of energy management policy within for corporate governance compliance.
Although there is no cost associated with the adopting the EU Code, it does require managerial commitment and resources to complete the activities necessary. Adoption should be considered the same as any other IT project and its implementation would benefit from a proven methodology that is specific to the task.
